Mobile and Immersive Learning for Literacy in Emerging Economies (MILLEE): India

Donors:

  1. Qualcomm - $100,000.00
  2. MacArthur Foundation - $238,000.00

“Your novel and innovative approach has fascinated me. I strongly believe it can cause a paradigm shift in the way poor children can learn language skills, particularly English, in rural areas. It can be a ‘magic wand’ to help overcome hosts of problems, to name a few – teacher apathy, lack of electricity, frequent closure of schools (teachers are off on training or census work!), and break-down of computers.” – N.S. Soundara Rajan, Co-Founder of Pygmalion, a project to promote English skills among rural children in India; and Co-Founder of Mysooru Literacy Trust, an initiative to promote literacy among the poor.

Our project is primarily funded by the National Science Foundation (USA) under Grant No. 0326582. The speech recognition component is supported by a Microsoft Research Digital Inclusion Award. Other sources of financial support include the Intel Undergraduate Research Program, Seeqpod Inc. and a prize award from the Bears Breaking Boundaries 2006 competition (serious games category).

2/21/08 - MILLEE won a $238,000 Innovation Award in the Digital Media and Learning Competition sponsored by the MacArthur Foundation.
