Residential Service Community: UC Berkeley Residence Halls

The Residential Service Community (RSC) aims to instill a value of service in the UC Berkeley residential halls.

Although the residence halls represent one of the most influential environments for student development, this resource remains untapped at UC Berkeley. RSC uses the opportunity of the Residence Halls to encourage students to explore their role in shaping the communities that they are part of—their Residence Halls, the UC Berkeley Campus, the City of Berkeley, and even our global community. Unlike any other program at Cal, RSC not only involves living-learning environments, but will also impact students and communities through service-learning.

The heart of the Residential Service Community will involve 40-50 students (20 plus students each semester) from the Unit 3 Residence Halls. RSC students will be enrolled in a 2-unit seminar, which will meet weekly for a 2-hours class. The class will use a multi-faceted approach to learning using lectures, discussions, films, readings, journal reflections, field trips, and most importantly, service-learning projects, including service projects students will organize themselves. RSC will carry academics into local communities, where students will not only apply what they learn in the classroom, but also learn through experience in the field. As their final project, RSC students will create and organize their own service projects for their residential community.
