IMPACT: UC Berkeley, MLK

Impact is a conference that is being held for high school students, for the first time, by members of a group on campus called Indus. It is open for all high school students in California, with an emphasis on students in the Bay Area. The goal of this conference is to encourage high school students to stay active in their culture when they leave home. So often elders try to keep their children immersed in their traditions as long as possible, but once students are on their own their motivation to continue them dwindles. We are striving to show students how to keep cultural influences alive by illustrating the different avenues in which they can continue to follow their traditions: not only through academics, but through numerous other cultural organizations on campus. We want to encourage students to not only attend college, but also learn how to use their culture as a way to connect to people on campus, to other organizations, to different ideas, and to their heritage.
