The fusion of Information Technology (IT) with the motorized wheelchair platform. A working prototype has been developed which incorporates rearview monitor, on board computing and lights for safe driving in the dark. The next prototype will include environmental control and vital sign monitoring into the system, as well as the ability to customize the platform to the needs of the individual user. This includes the ability to easily mount/remove the system from the motorized wheelchair when it is not needed. We are looking for generous companies to donate components and ambitious engineers to participate in prototype development.

Project mission:

Develop a marketable prototype of an IT platform that serves the needs of all or at least most motorized wheelchair users.

Potential impact:

This may become a product that is a standard upgrade feature on all new motorized wheelchairs. This segment of the population is growing, demanding more independence, and increasingly affluent. Furthermore, as baby boomers join the elderly population and some require motorized wheelchairs, the need for integrated IT will become increasingly apparent.
