Berkeley Green Campus Program: Berkeley, Ca

Green Campus is a program run by the Alliance to Save Energy, funded by the UC/CSU/IOU Energy Efficiency Partnership and a grant from the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Sustainability, and is implemented on 6 University of California campuses, 6 California State Universities, and Stanford University.

Green Campus is a student led energy efficiency campaign to educate students, staff, faculty, and the local community on the importance of energy conservation and realize real energy savings by establishing ongoing environmental projects at UC Berkeley. In doing this, we hope to demonstrate how energy and sustainability are integral to our society.

In the past four school years, Green Campus programs have resulted a reduction in energy usage equivalent to over $235,252 in avoided energy costs or a savings of over 2,353 MWh.

This year, UC Berkeley Green Campus Team will be running projects in the residence halls and on-campus. The on-campus projects include the Energy DeCal class, Shut the Sash campaign, Vending Miser Expansion, Haas Energy Challenge, ER 199, CRT Exchange, and Student Energy Projects. The campus housing projects include the CFL exchange, “Blackout Battles” energy competitions, Hall Staff Outreach, and the Green Room Series in collaboration with the Residential Sustainability Education Coordinators (RSECs). The Bears Breaking Boundaries grant for Energy and Environmental Innovation will help keep funding these programs alive at the UC Berkeley campus, produce energy savings, and lower overall campus greenhouse gas emissions.

Project mission:

To educate students, staff, faculty, and the local community about the importance of energy conservation, energy efficiency, and establish real energy savings for the campus.

Potential impact:

Reduce the campus' climate footprint through reduced energy consumption and spread awareness of energy efficiency through education and efficient technology.

Required resources:

  1. Total project needs: $4,000
