To create a standardized XML model of students to allow extensibility and new services to be built on top of existing legacy infrastructure at UC Berkeley.

Project mission:

  • To model the processes used for scheduling classes and making sure students are on track to receiving their degrees.
  • Analyze how current information systems (or "silos") are used and accessed throughout the processes.
  • Create a standardized XML model of the system.
  • Implement a prototype showing how the XML system can extend the current legacy systems.
  • Propose and implement additional services that can be implemented using the prototype.

Potential impact:

  • Improve students' overall registration experience
  • Allow students to easily manage their degree checklists and registration fees.
  • Reduce redundant, manual degree checks by students and staff.
  • Expand to allow for more services.
