BicyCALBicyCALBicyCAL is a University of California, Berkeley student initiated program, dedicated to increasing access to bicycles, advocating riding as means of alternative transportation, and offering free education on bike safety, maintenance, and construction. We seek to empower Bay Area youth with the ability to have a bike, ride safely, maintain it and understand the importance of biking in a larger environmental context. Our program is designed to teach youth about the history and politics of energy and transportation, while providing them with the knowledge and resources to build their own bicycle. This hands-on participatory educational experience will empower students to choose a healthy, inexpensive, and environmentally sustainable alternative transportation source – bicycles. Over the period of the course, students will be engaged to unfold the history and politics behind energy and transportation and will discover where energy and transportation is going in the 21st century. Each week students will begin to learn to build there own bicycles! We provide the tools, parts, and educational resources to help students build their own bicycle and stay safe while riding their bicycle. When students are done with the course they will know how to build, maintain, and safely ride a bicycle, while understanding the history of bikes and the importance of alternative transportation in light of our current economic and environmental state. If you are interested in having Bicycal come to your school or youth program, would like more information, or if you would like to support Bicycal, please send an e-mail to Bicycal@gmail.com.
