His interest in the built environment started during his undergraduate education in civil engineering at UC Davis. During this time, John had the unique opportunity to study engineering abroad at the prestigious University of Edinburgh in Scotland. Following his work at Davis, he completed a Fulbright Fellowship at the Technische Universitaet in Berlin Germany. The focus of this year long fellowship was researching the technical, social, engineering and architectural aspects of green building. The fellowship was of particular interest due to the Germany's aggressive policies and technologies addressing the built environment. Upon completion of the Fulbright Fellowship, John returned to California to begin his graduate studies in the department of Civil Engineering at UC Berkeley. His master thesis focused on low CO2 cement alternatives. In a side project at UC Berkeley John was part of a team that conducted research on sustainability in island communities. The goal of cutting CO2 emissions, reducing reliance on imported goods and the creation of local sustainable livelihoods resulted in a published article that summarized the findings and recommendations. The work can be found at: John was recently awarded the Anton Tedesko Fellowship by the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineers (IABSE). The focus of the fellowship is to allow for the study and research into a specific obstical or challenge facing the engineering community. The topic of John's fellowship will be "The Role of Structural Engineering in Achieving a Sustainable Built Environment." John will carry out the the Fellowship under the leadership of Robert Silman, a renowned structural engineer, at Mr. Silman's New York headquarters.
