Green Bike Share ProjectThe pilot project allows the first 500 UC Berkeley students, faculty, and staff to sign up for the program. All members sign up on the Big Ideas website through donation. The minimum annual membership fee costs $15 for the year (follow instructions below). Once you are a member, you will be able to check-out bikes for up to 72 hours without having to return the bicycle. Bicycles will be located on lower Sproul every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Membership includes a full-year pass to the Green Bike Share, access to its bikes and facilities, health and safety educational tools, a green bandana and a discounted helmet offer.
Safety will be stressed and first time riders will have to pass a riding test, a bike-safety assessment test, sign a liability waiver, and will be required to wear a helmet. A free green bandana and an optional discounted helmet will be provided upon first use of GBS and users will also be able to rent green helmets and green bandanas for $1 per day. The green bandanas will prevent any health issues from arising from sharing headgear. All rental bandanas and helmets will be cleaned on a per user basis. Bicycle lights and locks will also be provided with the service. Also, safe bicycle routes will be highlighted on UCB bicycle maps.
The brightly colored green bandanas, rental and discounted bike helmets, and bikes will all work to promote the project and increase its popularity on campus. Furthermore, the fact that the bikes will be brightly colored, easily identifiable and numbered works to discourage thefts and increase chances of theft recovery.
Management
Resource Green will manage the program in partnership with local bicycle cooperatives and Bike Link, a Berkeley-based web management firm, which uses e-lock technology to securely lock and manage the bike share system (Bike Link is introduced in Phase 1- Spring 2009). The Green Bike Share will also be hiring 5 new employees to help manage the program. In addition, the College of Environmental Design, College of Natural Resources, and the College of Public Health will provide internship opportunities in order to support the project at the educational level. Volunteers will receive internship credit as well as a free bike share pass in return for a part-time internship. The pilot program will establish itself as an extension of the RSF center. Maintenance will be supplied by employees and local bike cooperatives.

Green Collar Jobs IdeaLabBy Spring 2009, we intend to combine our collective research and connections to create a document outlining the different ways UC Berkeley community members can get substantively involved in and contribute to the Green Collar Jobs movement. We would like the information made available as a link on the website of related campus research groups and organizations.
